OLD BUSINESS

 

           A   Need suggestions for the next meeting of events that we can have to bring

                 our membership to the events.

           B   Need  an Events Committee made-up of our members not the Exec Com to

                 help decide what type events we can offer to the Commandery.

                  AUSA has requested that we provide help in honoring “Soldiers of Excellence”.

                  We approved a table of 10 for $250.00.  It will be held at the Quonset “O” Club.

3         Secretary’s minutes were moved, seconded, and approved

4         Treasurer’s report was moved, seconded, and approved.  We have $21,491.93

on hand.  We need to raise more money.  The Change of Command dinner cost us $300.00.  We had 53 in attendance. Check finally received by the Veterans’ Home,

5         Registrar reported 161 members.   We need to establish a recruiting plan.

1        Membership LTC Morgan did an analysis of our membership

   

   40% over age 70                             103 pay $35.00 in dues

   22 over age 80                                38 life pay no money

   46 not living in RI                           96 members will not be coming to any events

 

2        Scholarship Brig Gen D’Agostino reported $1,000 scholarship were recommend for

 Katherine Sullivan and Angela Macksoud.  Brig Gen D’Agostino moved to approve the scholarships, which was second and approved.

OLD BUSINESS

 

        A   COL Russell and BRIG GEN DAG gave us an update of the 53rd  Convention.

             Approved -Commanderies can have one person represent them at Convention

             Complete replacement of the JAG

             Clarification that past and present General Officers can wear the G O Officer Badge

             They visited Arlington National Cemetery                 

      

         B   Change of Command

 

             We need to get someone to pay for our Change of Command— good Corporate

             Sponsor.  Need to start planning next year’s Change of Command now.

 

         C  Obviously we need to recruit newer, younger members.  There are a number of

             sources to approach, National Guard, Naval Station Newport.  We can also attract

             new members by becoming more involved in celebrating historical events, ie WWI

              historical events.   This will help us appeal to a wider base of officers.

 

NEW BUSINESS

        

A   Dennis Morgan discussed the need to update our Operation Manual and By-Laws

              to help us refocus on our mission

         1   Ceremony started ay 1900 hours

         4   Commander introduced head table

         5   Motion was made to forego the reading of the

              Treasurer’s report and the Secretary’s Minutes.

              The motion was seconded and approved.  Copies

               were provided to members.

         6   An excellent dinner was provided by the Quonset O Club

         7   Two new members were sworn in.  MAJ Edward Chip Powell(RET)

              USA, and Mr James Kenney III.

 

SPEAKER

 

          FR Phil Salois was our speaker.  He provided an outstanding presentation of his

               time in Viet Nam and life afterwards.  A copy of his talk was provided to

          those in attendance.

Outgoing Commander Maj Miller presented Meritorious Medals to Chaplain

MAJ Mller discussed what was accomplished during his time as commander.

 

MAJ Kenney discussed what he wanted to accomplish during the next year.

He wants to get more members involved, and recruit younger members

4        Scholarship:  Interesting discussion concerning LTC Riccardi and the

awarding of scholarships.  Two were approved, Katherine Sullivan and Angela Macksoud.  Board approved $ 1000.00 for each.  A new Scholarship

Committee has been approved. COL Roberet Germani, Jr, COL David Russell, and LTC Kevin Entwistle  are the members.  BRIG GEN

D’Agostino is the chair.  LTC Riccardi resigned as Chair of the Committee

5        Awards:  COL Germani will present the award to the RING OCS.

We have the JR ROTC  covered.

OLD BUSINESS

1          Everyone has or will have sent in their Convention Applications

2          We have appox  8 companions for the National Guard Air Show.  We

will be notified when the Beer License Class will be given

 

NEW BUSINESS

            A    Brig Gen D’Agostino- Newport Navy League is having a Military Appreciation

                   Night Celebration.  We have split the cost in the past w ROA.  General D’Agostino

                  Made a motion, that was seconded and approved to provide $250.00 again.  COL

                  Russell made a motion for us to pay the total amount if ROA backs out.  It was seconded and

                  approved. 

            B   WWI Commission has contacted us and we will follow-up with them

 

 

            C   Followed up discussion from last month concerning reducing the number of monthly

                 Meetings.  We discussed different number of total meeting and how to insure that we

                 would meet all obligations of the commandery.  MAJ Miller and COL Russell continue

                 as is.  GENL D’ Agostino and LTC Morgan thought we should met every other month.

                 Discussed the need for our Commandery to do more and to meet our goals to honor

                and perpetuate the names of brave and loyal men and women.  Motion was made and

                seconded to keep monthly meetings:  8 approved, two against.  Motion carried.

  NEW BUSINESS    

                    LTC Guarnieri discussed RI Veterans NTWK and the success it has had.  It is on

        three times per week.  See WEB Site for times.  It has addressed many of the

        concerns of Vets.  Tim Gray will be on at some time in the future.

 

 

 

 

 

              Discussed up coming WWI Ceremony on 2 April at the WWI Memorial in

              Providence.  LTC Morgan will be the speaker.  Requested we all attend on Sunday.

 

              BRIGGEN D’Agostino brought the issue of  number of meetings we have annually.

              Among his concerns were the number of different organizations we all belong to

              and the amount of time each takes. Discussed the possibility of reducing the number

              of meetings we have.  After a lively discussion, we decided to table further discussions

              until April meeting.

              Checks were distributed to those companions who are going to National

              Commander told us that according to all metrics, we have the best Commandery.

     The State provide Gold Star License Plates which has been passed.  Also,      working on providing a tax exempt for Vets on the first $15,000 of the pension on

     $80,000 single or $100,000 if married.  Vote was 15 for. 69 against.  Met many obstacles from the powers to be(democrats).

     Discussed the possibilities of meeting every other month.  Postponed until Commander is feeling better.

Annual Business Meeting

REPORT

 

1 Meeting called to order at 2100 Hours by BG Reed

2 Secretary was directed to cast one vote to approve all of last Months’ Reports

3 A motion was made for the Treasurer to pay for the meal after each person pays $20.00

4 One new member was inducted in the MOFW he is LCDR (USN, RET) Kasim J. Yarn.  He was appointed Director of Veterans Affairs for RI. 

5  COL Russell read the names of those who were nominated, and a motion was made for the Secretary to cast one ballot for all.  The motion was seconded and approved.

6 Remarks were made by both Past Commander BG Reed and new Commander MAJ Miller. Flags were exchanged.

7 Benediction was said by Chaplain (CPT) Fr.Salois and the Meeting ended at 2120Hrs.

 

   Next Meeting is 19 July at 1830 Hrs. at Spiritos.

            B    Scholarship total has been reduced from $2,500 to $2,000.  Maj Miller will speak to General D’Agostino about the reduction.

            C     Change of Command has been rescheduled for 14 June.  Dress Blues or Tux, with MOFW Medallion at Spirito 1830 hours.

            D     Need more EXCOM members for the Air Show

1          Discussed need to recruit new members, and problems other organizations are having recruiting. 

2          Lobster Boil and Newport sail set for 29 August starting at 5:00 pm.

3          There were some mistakes on our monuments, which will corrected.  LTC Guarnieri Is working on it.

          We need corporate sponsors.  We need a flyer to help recruit both players

          and sponsors. 

      C  Reception for BG Callahan, TAG will be held Sunday 17 April at the Quonset

           O Club from 1300-1530 Hrs.

             MS Gorham discussed how we could raise funds for our Militia Tribute

             Mid- March for a decision of go or no go!!

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

           George Miller discussed a dinner and a night cruise Aug 2016 time

           frame. Cost estimated at $75 per person

 

           Change of command 4 May at 1800 HRS at the Quonset O Club.  This

           will be proceeded by a Memorial Service at our Memorial at the Veteran’s

           Cemetery.  There will be heavy appetizer provided during the meeting

 

           LTC Guarnieri made a motion that was seconded and approved to be

           Corporate member of ROA at $150.00 per year.

                those steak fry with the Pawtuxet Rangers, Army Birthday celebration, honoring long

                time members.

            C  John Duchesneau recommended we allocate $200.00 to assist the 70th Anniversary

               Celebration of the end of WW II.  The celebration will take place on 10 Aug at Newport

               City Hall @ 12:00.  The motion was seconded and approved.

1               Commander and registrar stressed the need for new companions.

2               Need to change scholarship form.  The members are BG D’Agostino, COL Luz,

3               Award presentations have been made to all ROTC Units and NG OCS Graduate.

          BG Reed recommended free memberships for OCS and ROTC graduates. It was seconded and approved.

4               Website Maj Miller reminded us to view the WEBSITE weekly.  Newsletter needs input

          Also discussed need to send the Newsletter to politicians, other military, Facebook and others groups

 

5               COL Fitzpatrick announced that National has been set-up as a non-profit  501C-19 tax exempt.

6        Quartermaster-Mr John Duchesneau reported the following  items on hand for sale: Label pins, mugs, hats, pens and coins.  More to come.

-          The Commander informed us that the site for our monument project was selected and COL Russell

OLD Business

            LTC Guanieri spoke with the editor of the NAVALOG, Richard  Alexander and also

            wrote an article for the NAVALOG about MOFW.

            Peg TV  Next show will be with Prov Fire Chief George Farrell, who is very active

            with the Honor Flights.

            We had a lengthy discussion concerning a MOFW Memorial at the RI Vets Cemetery.

            LTC Guarnieri will meet with Susan Powell at the Cemetery  to discuss the location of

            our Memorial. The cost is estimated at $13,800.   We discussed installing the Memorial this

            year and what is required to be accomplished it.

            General D’Agostino made a motion “we pay for the Memorial out of existing funds, contingent

            on receiving approval from the Cemetery, for up to $15,000.00.”  This was seconded and     

            approved.

 

New Business

            Treasurer recommended that we renew our yearly membership with the Westerly Armory. 

            It was seconded and approved/

            The Commander swore in new member CWO3 Brad Hopkins.

            General Reed recommend that as part of Estate Planning  that we adopt what the

            American Legion sends to their membership

Registrar -discussed the results of the annual dues collection.  Six members did not Re-up.

 

COMMITTEE  REPORTS

 

             Discussed the need for more members.  We need to start recruit at the Naval

             War College and with those that we have served with in the past.

             Scholarship  LTC Riccardi said we have three awardees, 2 for $750, and 1 for $750.

                      

            Awards – We covered all of the ROTCs awards and the only one left is the RING OCS.

            LTC Guarnieri and MAJ  Miller will present the award.

              

           Motion made and approved that a scholarship recipient can only receive an award once.

           LTCs Riccardi and Clarke will write a motion to be added to our Operations Manual for

           the next meeting.

 

            Motion was made  and approved that  Nieces and Nephews are not eligible for scholarship

            consideration.

 

           Webmaster MAJ Miller said that our Newsletter will be out next week.  We should be checking

           the Web Site on a regular basis.

           Golf Tournament was a success.  We raised $2,737.00.

           Commander informed us that we may have the support of the Fire Dept.

           Commander thank all those who took part in reading of the name of those

           from RI whose names are on the Viet Nam Wall.  The traveling wall was in

           RI from 5-8 Jun.  The individuals were LTC Guarnieri , BG Reed, LTC Miller, LTC

           Clarke and Past Commander Humble.

 

NEW BUSINESS

           Scholarship Presentation will Thursday 19 Jun 2014 @ Spirito,s.

           Discussed building of RI MOFW Monument @ the RI Veterans Cemetery .

           We are looking at three solutions.  However, first we must secure a site at the

           Cemetery.  LTC Guarnieri  will persue this and have an answer for our next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Commander discussed his  vision  for the next year.    What should we do to make

people aware of who we are and what we do.  How do we engage our members to

participate in our own events.  One is to promote our TV Ventures.

 

Discussed a RI MOFW Memorial.  Will take time to design a memorial and decide where,

how much,when etc .

OLD BUSINESS:  CPT  Duchesneau discussed  the commemoration of the Battle of Lake Erie on 10

            Sep in Newport.  CPT Duchesneau was commended for the outstanding job

            that he did in organizing and completely the commemoration.  Discussed the

            mayors event on 22 Oct.  Financial report was postponed due to absence of LTC Kenney. 

 

NEW BUSINESS:  Ron Barnes from the Pawtuxet Rangers discussed the history of the Rangers. 

Commander Humble discussed purposed budget for next year.

Dec meeting will be with ROA and AUSA.  Date to be determine.  CPT Duchneseau discussed having an Annual Ball. Commander Humble

discussed having a RI Independence Day celebration at each of the state Capitals.

OLD BUSINESS: COL Russell, LTCs Morgan and Kenney met with  Biltmore Hotel to discuss the NationalConvention. Everything is on schedule.

LTC Morgan discussed program book and the need  to get more sponsors.

 LTC Riccardi discussed the Scholarship program. $3,000.00 has been allocated  for  this year. Looking at a possible combined MOFW,ROA, and AUSA function to  award the  Scholarships.

LTC Morgan recommended a $300.00 donation for the Sea Cadets and it was   approved.

 

Golf tournament is on Jun1@Triggs . A lively discussion followed. Will use additional list from ROA and AUSA. The meal will be Texas BBQ.

Following all discussion it was approved for MAJ Miller and committee to make the decisions  required. A $1,000.00 was approved for prizes.  Also, possible  for a large raffle  prize of 2 tickets and 1week in  FL

The Westerly Armory.  We decided not to do an event for the end of the War in Iraq.  COL Russell and LTC Morgan met with National in Washington to start discussion for next May’s National Convention in Providence.

 

NEW BUSINESS:  COL Babcock and LTC Morgan discussed the need to recruit younger members and how to do it.  Reviewed the golf tournament and what potential changes may needed.
